Nosy little Needle Nose at Stingray City in Grand Cayman

Nosy little Needle Nose at Stingray City in Grand Cayman

It's not only stingrays that you get to meet at the Sandbar in Grand Cayman, there are other cute little critters who dart through this area as well. Above is the Needle Nose - very pretty fish who reflect the silver blue of the caribbean ocean so very beautifully - faster than light these little guys! We often see conch, are sometimes spoilt with a King Helmut, and Blue Runners are seen darting about between the people. Don't forget the sea gulls who hover above trying to steal the squid from your hands!

Today was somewhat choppy but oh so wonderfully bright and cheerful. Our guests took on the tour with gusto and we had an amazing time with them. The waters were back to the beautiful blue and the clarity of it was truly awesome.

We are expecting some idyllic conditions tomorrow, so can't wait to share photos (Captain Mario - take lots!), but the weather is not looking too happy for Saturday and Sunday - ugh! Well, you never know ..... it can change in hours!

Hope you all have a beautiful day and come visit us soon!

REMINISCING ABOUT NON-WINDY DAYS.....

If anyone has been following the Captain's Log, one recurring theme over the last 6-8 weeks has been the lament over windy weather ....... how dull it is to keep on about it! Today looks not much better and a decision has still to be made about whether we go ahead with today's tour.....

So, let's cheer up, put on a happy face, and share some photos from the past tours ..... wishing you a wonderful weekend!

17 JANUARY 2015 - A LUCKY CATCH!

Determination pays off occasionally.......

Of course there is ALWAYS argument about whether it is stubbornness or determination ..... anyways .....

On Friday just past, our Captain noted that there were not one, but two brown pelicans at Starfish Point (see post here). Initially, one had previously been spotted and named "Rasta" by our 1st Mate Dwayne, but then a second pelican appeared!!

Mandy (pale skinned office slave of the company) had not managed to get out on the boat since October - but this was NOT to be missed. And so it was that poor Captain Mario was forced into turning the boat back from the dock at the end of the morning tour - he might have been able to refuse Mandy, but definitely not his daughter Gina who was itching to see Starfish Point - her all time favourite place on the island!!

Starfish Point revealed not one, not two, but THREE pelicans!! They had become the centre of attention and were happily whooping it up - swooshing through the air over our heads and just generally showing off their flying skills. They do not make very elegant landings, we must say. They fly over head so gracefully but tended to look like an inebriated party-goer trying to negotiation an "invisible" glass door - just a big splat with wings and legs everywhere!

They put on this display for some 10 minutes before taking off for another spot, so what luck we had in witnessing them - awesome moment!

BARBARA AND CAPTAIN MARIO .....

If you have read the Captain's Log recently, you will know we have been suffering a truly long and horrible tropical cold front for longer than we care to think about. Very high winds blowing in the wrong direction meant that the North Sound was very inhospitable to tours and excursions, and many of our guests were left disappointed at cancellations. However, we refuse to put financial considerations before safety of our guests ...... ever.

So, today's tour under blue skies and Caribbean sun was an absolute delight, and everyone island wide were in the mood for fun and frolic - including Barbara the stingray, it would seem.

Barbara and Stumpy have been joining us quite regularly at our snorkel stops lately, playing "tag" with the guests and generally being inquisitive. Today Barbara joined us again, before flirting with Captain Mario and allowing him to take her over to the guests for a meet and greet. Barbara is Captain Mario's favourite, and she knows it, giving him puppy dog looks and kisses. She also followed us over to the Sandbar at Stingray City where she continued to work her charm on our tour guests.

Our deckhand JR captured these awesome pictures of the interaction and we hope you enjoy!

20 December 2014 - Grand Cayman Stingray City tours

Tour Time : 9:30am (departed 9:30am)

Guests from : Island Princess cruise, Aida Bella cruise, residents

Star Stingray : Barbara

Grand Cayman snorkelling is the best in the Caribbean

It is tempting to say that "Barbara" was the star of today's tour, but I think perhaps she came second today.

Although she was the perfect host at Stingray City Sandbar, cuddling and kissing her gorgeous heart out, there was one tour guest who had NEVER set foot in the ocean before, and she did it today, with us, with stingrays swimming around. WAY TO GO!

We have hosted many island visitors who are unable to swim, and they have trusted our crew enough to join in the snorkelling and maximise their visit to some of Grand Cayman's best attractions. But to have someone who  has never even put her foot into an ocean before, do it with us AND do it with stingrays .... well ... we think she is a pretty awesome woman!

Mom has never been in the ocean before .... but she did it with us and the stingrays! Kudos!

Unlike yesterday's tour, today everything went perfectly and the excursion was great. The gorgeous Caribbean sun was out and the island was bathed in the holiday feeling again ... if there were any destination weddings on the go today, we are pretty sure that they were accompanied by huge sighs of relief after the tropical cold fronts we have been experiencing!

And yes, Barbara, you can go back to being the star again tomorrow!

13 December 2014 - Tours to Stingray City

Tour Time : 10:30am (departed 10:40am - a little late due to trying guests who were MIA)

Guests from : Treasure Island Hotel, Lime Tree Bay, Westin, Marriott

Star Stingray : Snowflake

Today's caribbean skies was a constant battle between radiant Caribbean sun and sulky grey clouds. The winds have weakened but we were still feeling a strong breeze and experiencing choppy waters in the North Sound (see below!). This is Grand Cayman's winter weather......

However, a good time was had by our tour guests. Captain Mario reports that one had the most infectious laugh he has ever heard, and that this laugh was owned by a really jolly person - so the excursion was one ripple of laughter of the other. How awesome.

The north side of Starfish Point proved unpleasant, so Captain Mario opted for the North Side of the beach. Every captain has "those" days, and Captain Mario put on a display of first - how not to anchor the boat and then a second - exactly how to anchor the boat - to much teasing from those aboard!

It proved to be absolutely worth it! All enjoyed this little piece of caribbean paradise, ogling the starfish in the awesomely translucent water. One vacation visitor even enjoyed a pedicure by a tiny little crab whilst here!

These are the kind of moments that make each and every one of our shore excursions in Grand Cayman so unique - and we love it!

So if you are planning your next caribbean holiday, we hope you pop on over and give us something exciting to write about!
